PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Venture Box is a subscription service for intermediate to advanced hikers offering products for a variety of needs and uses. Entered in the Paperboard Packaging Alliance Student Design Challenge, the objective was to "design packaging for the contents of a subscription box package that enhances the customer experience." The solution needed to be 70% paperboard, and fall under one of three categories; travel-size cosmetics, on-the-go snacks, or fitness gear essentials. Venture Box was selected as a Runner Up in this challenge.
This project was in collaboration with fellow Graphic Designer, Karley Allis, and Packaging Scientists, Sydney Ryan, & Madison Griebel.
PACKAGE FEATURES
The Venture Box shipper features a unique cantilever experience, allowing products to be presented to the consumer, and allow for an easy shift to in-store usage. Individual product packaging is also removable and labeled for more convenient storage.
DESIGN DECISIONS
We wanted the shipper for Venture Box to be simple and understated to allow the interior products and packaging stand out. We kept the exterior as the raw kraft corrugate with minimal black graphics to make the box feel more nature-like and appeal to our audience. For the interior, we wanted to create a stark contrast with the bright paperboard packaging, so we opted for a black on black topographic map - a basic visual most hikers are familiar with. We also included the category icons and product descriptions on the interior.
For the interior paperboard product packaging, we chose to use active colors, which we toned down to give a more earthy connection. Each box is a monochromatic illustration of a different mountain range with their coordinates noted on the shipper with the product categories, and is labeled by category on the front, which is visible when they are removed from the shipper.
PRODUCTS
To keep with the hiking mindset, we chose to create 3 product categories focused on basic human needs. These categories are Fuel, featuring consumable snacks such as energy bars & hydration items; Shelter, including clothing items which can help protect you such as, hats, gloves, or socks; and our last category is Gear, which includes equipment such as medical supplies or rope.
These categories would feature different related items each time a box is received. For our first box, we decided on Nuun Hydration Tablets to add to your water, a buff allowing for a variety of ways to keep warm or cool in varied climates, and a paracord bracelet offering an easy way to carry a long length of rope.
TRAVEL BUDDY SETH THE SASQUATCH
With your first Venture Box purchase you recieve your very own Seth the Sasquatch to be used as a travel bug and encourage more venturing and help customers connect to the Venture community. Seth may be used as either the keychain or paper cut out included with your first box.
Seth is also found within the package graphics several times to encourage small scale exploration as well.
